Appreciative Inquiry and Cornerstones Workshop

From October 6 to 10, a workshop on Appreciative Inquiry and Cornerstones was held at Kep Ville, Kampot Province. Workshop participants were 27 community facilitators and a pool of trainers from 15 existing project partners. The 5-day workshop was aimed at allowing participants to discuss and understand the Cornerstones by relating them to real activities of self-help groups (SHGs), and to reinforce the teams to facilitate the SHGs in developing their visions and action plans.

The workshop started with a review of Values-Based Holistic Community Development (VBHCD), the triadic model, shared leadership, and personal leadership. During the workshop, participants were divided into small groups to present and explain how the Cornerstones were carried out in real activities of the SHGs and linked them to VBHCD and personal leadership.

The next session was focused mainly on the purpose of Participatory Self-Review and Planning and how to conduct a PSRP session. At the end of this lesson, participants were asked to practice PSRP based on their understanding on the 12 Cornerstones, and to review the cycle of project management in order that they could link it to Appreciative Inquiry (AI).

At the last session, the AI concept and its cycle, and the differences between AI and Problem Solving were introduced. The small groups were required to use the AI cycle to solve an issue identified in the SHG, and then present the results.

Throughout the workshop, several lesson learns were identified:

  • A tool is needed for the participants to more easily explain the Cornerstones to SHGs;

  • The conduct of PSRP on the Cornerstones is imperative in helping project partners follow up on SHGs’ understanding and internalization of the Cornerstones;

  • Though AI is a new concept, the participants realized that they have utilized some parts of this tool in working with the poor and SHGs;

  • The application of AI in developing action plans with the SHGs is quite useful and empowers the SHGs to become more independent; and

  • The AI cycle can be used in any situation of the SHGs, before or after group formation.
