Grassroots Advocacy Training
|
|
|

|
From March 16-19, 2010, Heifer Cambodia conducted a training course on grassroots advocacy in Kampong Chhnang
Province. The training aimed at providing all

Heifer Cambodia staff and Heifer
project partners a general knowledge related to advocacy, and
the development of an action plan for community advocacy. Out of
40 participants, 13 were Heifer Cambodia staff, and 27 were
project partners from 14 partner organizations who are
implementing Heifer projects in five provinces throughout
Cambodia.
The training introduced to the participants a range of topics including Human Rights, What is Advocacy and Why, Role of Advocator, Source of Power, Steps and Methods for Advocate, Problem Solving, and How to Build Community Ownership.
During the group discussion, participants shared knowledge and experience on advocacy work in their communities. Sharing of personal achievements and future plans on community advocacy was also a good way for self-empowerment. Advocacy is a strategy that community can use for multiple purposes.
At the end of the training, the participants were more clear and had a better understanding about the difference between advocacy and problem solving, and that advocacy needs no violence. They also developed an advocacy plan for their communities to adopt Heifer’s Values-Based Holistic Community Development for community development activities.
