Facilitated by the Center for Livestock and Agriculture Development (CelAgrid), one of Heifer’s project partners, a Passing on the Gift (POG) celebration was held at Angtaphouk village, Sanlong commune, Trang district, Takeo province, on April 18. Formed in 2004, the Self-Help Group (SHG) has implemented the project named, “Improving Food Production for Tribal and Woman Groups” (ID# 22-0030-11) to improve their food security and family incomes and strengthen women’s capacity in leadership. After a few years of the project implementation, they produced the results from the inputs they received and passed on their resources and love to other needy families.
The 50 participants in the ceremony included project beneficiaries, project partners and Heifer Cambodia staff, village leaders, Sanlong Commune Council chief and members and the Deputy Governor of Trang District. During the celebration, 13 original families passed on 13 heifers and animal forage trees to 13 other poor families in the group. They passed on not only the animals and knowledge, but also their care and love to the recipients.
“Firstly, when I joined the group, my purpose was just to receive animal, vegetable and knowledge, as I had not received income from my yard for a long time,” recalled Svay Soun, a widow with nine children, who is an original family to pass on her resources to the new SHG member. She stated, “I had never dreamed that I could share my resources with others. But my mind was changed after I received the Cornerstones Training. Today, I am passing on a heifer, trichenthera, mulberry, elephant grass, cassava trees, mint and my experiences to the needy family.”
She also hoped the recipient would take care of the animal and internalize the 12 Cornerstones values that can make them succeed like she did.
The celebration ended with joyful and solidarity, followed by group sharing lunch.
