A five-day training course on Valued-based Holistic Community Development (VBHCD) was provided by the Heifer Cambodia Team to various development organizations from 13 provinces throughout Cambodia. The training, which was conducted in Pursat Province from August 18-22, was attended by 27 development organization leaders who would take actions and adopt Heifer’s VBHCD model in their projects. The purpose of the training was to disseminate the VBHCD concept to the development organizations to identify the importance of the VBHCD approach and to learn how to conduct a Participatory Self-Review and Planning (PSRP)
as a tool for project planning and implementation. The training
also provided opportunities to the development organizations to
share their experiences in development activities and to learn
from each other.
The 27 training participants will receive three training packages. However, in this course, only training package I was introduced, which consisted of four modules: VBHCH - Giving the participants general information on Heifer’s history and VBHCD description; Personal Leadership and Cornerstones - Discussing leadership, personal leadership, attitude and behavior, and the definition of 12 Cornerstones; PSRP
- As a tool to empower participants and evaluate group
activities; and Field Visit - Letting the participants see how
the Cornerstones are applied at the field level and what they
mean to the participants.
During the training, all participants enthusiastically discussed each topic by fully participating in sharing their ideas on the 12 Cornerstones. They were strongly impressed by and able to catch up with the VBHCD concept, as some elements of the VBHCD approach were similar to what they were practicing in their development activities. The participants also were fascinated with the field visit to a Heifer-funded community in Pramouy Village and Commune, Veal Veng District, Pursat
Province, as they could see how the Cornerstones were
internalized among the project beneficiaries and how their lives
had been transformed after participating in the project
implementation.
The training participants will take a three month break from training to practice what they have learned. The next course on training package II will be provided to them in December.
