Assisting Disable Farmers in Rural Communities |
|
|
|
Over several years of its program implementation in working with five of the 18 existing partner organizations, Heifer Cambodia has assisted 120 disabled families in rural communities throughout Cambodia by providing them both mental and physical resources, especially, Cornerstones-based values, to enable them to move toward sustainable development for their new hope and life, including material, personal and social well-being which reflected ground, deepen and external levels of impact through the implementation of Values-Based Holistic Community Development (VBHCD) approach. |
|
|
|
In 2008, under Heifer’s support, the Disability Development Service in Pursat
(DDSP), one of Heifer's project partners, ran a 3-year project (22-00390-25) to assist 40 disabled people who were affected during the civil war, in two communities (Toul Totoeng and Talo).
They were encouraged to form
their Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
for long-term development. |
 |
|
With facilitation of Heifer staff and community
facilitators from DDSP, disabled people pay
their attention to and participate in the
community meeting to learn how to establish
their own SHGs and saving scheme for local
resource base development as well. |
As same as other existing SHGs, these disabled groups (some lost their leg, some lost their hand, and some lost an eye) have actively been involved in VBHCD approach, receiving a series of training courses. Before they were provided the physical inputs to improve their field practice of the integrated farming system, they received both non-technical trainings - Cornerstones, SHG
formation, other related |
 |
social issues, life skills and
so forth - and technical trainings in animal husbandry
and management, integrated farming system, and
agricultural techniques for improvement of their living
conditions, as well as the sustainable community
development. |
|
After full participation in the SHG
formation, they work together to build animal houses and
practice integrated farming system within the target community |
Mr. Dy Chann, 50, a former Khmer Rouge (KR) family, became disabled in 1985. His left leg was amputated by a landmine while he fought against the government armed forces during the civil war. After the reintegration of the KR troop with the government, his family with three daughters resettled in Kbal Tumnub village, Malai district. Like other poor families, he was encouraged to join the SHG. He received both mental and material support from Heifer Cambodia, working in partnership with Cambodian Family Economic Development Association (CFEDA). Meanwhile, he is recognized as an active SHG member. He was selected as a focal person who can share best practices in integrated farming systems and awareness of mine risk. |

“Cornerstones have inspired me to have more confidence and hope,” said Dy Chann
with his strong commitment in working to improve his family’s
standard of living, as well as sustainable community
development. “After passing on a first female offspring to a
needy family, I still have other two cowsthat can be used as gifts for my daughters when they get
married. |

Dy Chann is granted Heifer’s POG certificate
during the POG celebration with participation
of Mr. Yos Sok, Deputy Governor of Malai
District. |
