On February 16, 2011, Heifer Cambodia received a letter of thanks from Mr. Uy Thon, district governor of Svay Chrum, Svay Rieng

Farmer Economic Development (CFED) organization through conducting activities and promoting Heifer’s Values-Based Community Development approach and 12 Cornerstones. The governor also appreciates Heifer’s humanitarian activities and development work. He expressed his best wishes to the Heifer Cambodia country director and her colleagues. |

Since 2007, Heifer Cambodia has worked in partnership with project partner CFED implementing two Heifer-funded projects – Community Empowerment for Poverty Reduction project and Community’s Empowerment and Environmental Protection project – in nine villages of the Svay Chrum district. So far, the projects have served 387 farm families who have formed themselves into 18 Self-Help Groups (SHG)
by working together to develop their families and communities. |
| |
|
Over the past four years of the
project implementation, huge changes have been seen in food
security and behavior. Seventy percent of the project members
have improved their nutrition status as they add more meat
(mostly chicken), eggs, and vegetables from their home garden to
their daily meals. They sell the surplus for additional family
income. Most project beneficiaries earn their income from the
sale of vegetables, poultry and swine products. The total group
fund of the 18 groups is 20,000,000 Riels (about $5,000). The project members have used their group fund to do group businesses including bamboo handicraft, vegetable production, and rice production. Women’s leadership has increased as 48 of 54 persons in group-leadership roles are women. One of them was elected as a District Council member in charge of children and women’s affairs. In 2009, 12 percent of villagers migrated to look for jobs in cities. However, the amount decreased to 6 percent in 2010. Domestic violence has decreased from 38 to 15 cases. The projects also gained strong support from the local authorities as they acknowledge that Heifer’s approach and model is the right path for development. |
