Strengthening Leadership of PPs and CFs

To ensure the effectiveness, efficiency and consistency of the project implementation of the organization partners, a training course on leadership and gender in development was provided to 15 directors from Heifer Non-Government Organization (NGO) partners who would transform this practical training into practical knowledge for project beneficiaries. Conducted at Kampong Cham province from March 16-20, the training was aimed at strengthening their leadership capacity, increasing their gender capacity in development work, and providing them the opportunity to learn best practices and challenges from each other.

The course outlines related to leadership training included Leadership, Leadership vs. Management, Leaders and Followers, Personal Leadership, Shared Leadership and NGO Mainstreaming, while the main topics of the course on gender in development work consisted of Gender and Sex, Gender Need and Communication, Gender Analysis and Mainstreaming and the Gender Situation in Cambodia.

The five-day training course is very important to ensure good management within the NGO partners, which impacts the Heifer project implementation. The participants showed their interest in the topics by fully participating, actively asking questions and especially sharing their ideas, best practices and challenges in NGO management and gender mainstreaming at NGO and community levels.

In a separate event on March 19, a Community Facilitator (CF) annual workshop was held at Northwest Regional Office in Battambang province, with participation of 18 CFs who play key roles in working directly with project families in their efforts to alleviate poverty through values-based development. The purpose of the workshop was to strengthen the CFs’ capacity in project implementation and to provide them the opportunities to share and learn together on how to strengthen the project as well as long term partnership in the future.

Presented by the Interim Country Director, Ho Bunyeth, the workshop started with the introduction of the triadic model and Values-based Holistic Community Development (VBHCD) concept with an explanation of its approach. During the workshop, two CFs were allowed to do their presentation respectively for sharing their Passing on the Gift (POG) practice and project management. Planning, monitoring and evaluation tools and cash flow request were also presented to the participants for their practice in their action plan. A topic on identification of impact stories and writing case studies to reflect three levels of impact in the project implementation was also raised for discussion.

At the last session of the workshop, the participants were encouraged to share their issues and challenges they faced during the project implementation and to find a way together to solve these problems.
