After receiving the training package I on Values-Based Holistic Community Development (VBHCD) in August, the 27 trainees from various development organizations were very interested in Heifer’s model of community development. They shared the knowledge gained from the training to their staff and communities and practiced the model in their projects.
From November 30-December 5, a training package II was provided to them in Battambang Province, Cambodia. The training was aimed at the participants learning about Self-Help Group (SHG) formation and Heifer’s strategy in working with SHGs to sustain their community, and at the participants sharing with each other their knowledge and experiences in working with the SHGs at their target areas.
The main topics introduced in this session included the concept of SHG and formation, strengthening the SHG, and SHG saving and credit. Before the session started, the participants were requested to review and share their activities and work related to application of the Cornerstones and VBHCD knowledge at organizational and grassroots levels. Then factors of poverty were also introduced.
During the training session, the participants were very active in sharing and exchanging their ideas and experiences in working with SHGs and SHG formation by applying their model and learning on how Heifer’s model worked. They were excited to learn new things. They acknowledged and accepted Heifer’s Cornerstones and VBHCD approach, especially, in SHG formation, saying that if a SHG was strong, the inputs provided would produce satisfactory impacts.
At the end of the session, the participants made field visits to two Heifer-funded communities to learn how the SHGs worked. After the visit, they conducted a reflection and shared some recommendations for improvement.
