Continuous Culture of Passing on the Gifts

During the April POG campaign, three self help groups (SHGs) implementing the “Developing Draft Animal Resources for Poor Farmer Groups” project (ID#22-0030-15), supervised by Rural Children Saving Association (RCSA) – one of Heifer project partners, organized a POG celebration at Veal Chamsrei village, Kampong Seilar commune, Kampong Seilar district, Preah Sikanouk province, April 21.

The ceremony was conducted publicly with participation of 50 people including the SHG members and committees, director of Steung Chral High School, village leaders, Kampong Seilar Commune Council chief and members, staff from Cambodia Elephant Complex Group and Heifer Cambodia, and the Deputy Governor of Kampong Seilar District.

At the celebration, five original families passed on five heifer and animal forage trees to five new SHG members. Reflecting from their smiling and delighted face, they passed on not only their resources and knowledge, but also their care and love to the recipients.

“I cannot imagine that I become a donor,” said Ms Khut Kin, an original family who is passing on the gifts today. She added, “You know before five year ago, my family was the poorest one in the village. But after joining the group, I received a heifer, other resources, and trainings from Heifer that have made my hope grew. Applying the 12 Cornerstones values in real life, my family’s life has been transformed. We earn income, able to send our children to school. Today, I am passing on these gifts to you, hoping that you care for it even better than I have. May God bless you and the POG approach stay in our heart forever.”

“I feel helpful with these gifts,” said Mr. Tith Sol, the recipient of the new SHG, adding, “They will produce offspring to pass on to others.”

Expressing his impression at the celebration, Mr. Kheng Chheng, Deputy Governor of Kampong Seilar District, appreciated Heifer’ POG approach which is the right strategy in alleviating poverty and hunger and encouraging people to work together. “The gifts will spread throughout the district through the culture of POG while new groups of marginalized farmers are formed,” said the Deputy Governor. He also spoke of future possibility in establishing farmer associations or cooperatives which would emerge from combination of the SHGs together when they became strong.
