A Small Contribution
Can Change Poor Family's Life
|
Sharing and Caring
is a Cornerstone that Heifer Cambodia staff have tried very hard
to promote through project partners. Not only by talking about
it, but by applying or leading by action.
While visiting the new project “Community Empowerment for Poverty Reduction” in Svay Rieng province, Heifer Cambodia staff found that one of the project families is very poor and their house was very old with a leaky roof through which they could see the sky. During the rainy season, Ms. Ouk Samon, a 60-year-old SHG member, her husband Mr. Gnourn Kouy and their six children were always afraid of the rain at night as nearly the whole house got wet.
The Project Management Committee (PMC) members and SHG leaders mentioned to the staff that this family is very poor compared with other families. The group wanted to help repair their roof but lacked the money for roofing materials. Knowing this, the Heifer Cambodia staff discussed and all agreed to contribute money for the roofing materials. A total of 200,000 Riel (about $47.61) was contributed by Heifer Cambodia staff and given to the SHG for repairing Ms. Ouk Samon’s house. With the small contribution from the staff, SHG members encouraged by the PMC took quick action. In only one day, with strong solidarity and commitment, the family’s home was successfully repaired.
“It has shown me how strong the solidarity is when we come together. Only one day helps change our lives, and encourages us to commit to helping others like what others helped us. I don’t know what to say; it is more than just ‘thanks.’ We are so happy to have a better house, and our family is no longer afraid of getting wet during the rain…, and we have a safe place for our rice stock,” Ms. Ouk Samon said with a smile and tears of joy.

“We used to stay under the rain and our
things were getting wet at all times. We feel like we
have a new home now. … This project brings us hope and
builds community solidarity. Now we start growing
vegetables and raising animals, and we hope that our
living condition will be better soon,” Mr. Gnourn Kouy
said. “This project is reinforcing our community values
and dignity. We would like to thank the group members,
Project Management Committee, and especially Heifer
Cambodia staff for its kind support and generosity,” Ms.
Samon added. |
