From July 21-25, a package-V training course on Training of Trainer (TOT) was provided by the Heifer Cambodia Team to 15 United Nations Development Program (UNDP) staff including United Nations Volunteers (UNVs), staff from Project Implementation Unit of Environment Department (PIU), and rangers from the Tonle Sap Lake area in Kampong Chhnang Province. The purpose of the training was for the UNDP staff to build staff capacity on facilitation skills to assist communities in their core areas.
The five-day training course consisted of three objectives: To enable the trainees to deeply understand the principles and values of facilitation skills; to strengthen facilitation and presentation skills of the trainees; and to make the trainees feel confident and have positive attitudes as good trainers/facilitators. The main topics which were raised for the course included adult learning principles, training cycle, ten key principles of training, facilitation skills, training methodology and feedback, monitoring and evaluation.
During the training course, the participants expressed their strong interests in each topic by fully participating and actively raising questions and sharing their ideas and experiences, as the training could help them become good facilitators for their jobs. They worked hard and practiced what they learned at the end of the course. They also promised to pass on the knowledge and skills gained from the training to their communities and co-workers in order to achieve sustainable community development.
This is the last package of the five packages of the Value-based Holistic Community Development (VBHCD) training, of which the first one was provided to the trainees in October 2007 after a Cooperation Memorandum was signed in October 8, 2007, between Heifer Cambodia and Tenle Sap Conservation Project (TSCP) funded by UNDP/GEF. The cooperation also reflects the external level of impact, as Heifer’s VBHCD model is being replicated and applied by the UNDP to assist the communities in the TSCP.
The TSCP aims at developing the management capacity for biodiversity conservation in the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve (TSBR) through enhancing the capacity for management of biodiversity in the TSBR’s core areas, developing systems for monitoring and management of biodiversity, and promoting awareness, education and outreach on biodiversity conservation in the TSBR. The project, which is being implemented in three core areas of the Ministry of Environment, including Prek Toal, Boeng Tonle Chhmar and Stung Sen, has three components of which Livelihoods is one among them.
