The five-day training was aimed at
building capacity of literacy facilitators (LFs), community facilitators (CFs) and project coordinators (PCs) on understanding of the VBLP concept and facilitation skills to run VBLP class in their communities. Twenty-two participants attending the course were from five new Heifer partner organizations who just started Heifer projects in December 2009.
The five partner organizations include literacy class in the project activities for their targeted women’s groups. The women in these groups lack the ability to read and write, identifying their lack of education as the root cause of their poverty.
Three main topics presented to the trainees included facilitation skills, the VBLP concept, and lesson plans. The training was designed into two parts. For the first two days, participants discussed general concepts related to education, illiteracy, facilitation skills, and development of a lesson plan. For the last three days, the participants were assigned to prepare lesson plans and practice running the VBLP class by using VBLP book for LFs.
Throughout the sessions, the participants involved fully in sharing ideas and experiences in terms of education, facilitation skills, and the VBLP concept. Coming to the end of the training, the participants reviewed and checked the VBLP book and raised questions so that they could capture the whole picture of the book.
Finally, the participants developed their clear plan and schedule for conducting VBLP class in their communities. The program will strengthen each project participant’s understanding of the Cornerstones principles, while also teaching literacy.
