In December 2010, soon after earning a bachelor’s degree in Economic Science with an emphasis on Economic Development at Royal University of Law, Mr. Chhoeun Tynoborin, 23, began volunteering for Heifer Cambodia. His volunteer work provided valuable experience in values-based holistic community development that will serve him well in future endeavors, both personal and professional. On July 1, 2011, after a successful interview with ARTISANS Association of Cambodia, he became a full-time staff member with the local non-governmental organization (NGO). In the letter below, Chhoeun expresses excitement and gratitude to Heifer for the great opportunity.
Working with Heifer is a great opportunity to develop my own knowledge and future job opportunities.
During my work, I found out two changes for myself as internal and external changes. For my internal changes, I have embraced and internalized the 12 values of the Cornerstones. They change much my habit to be more and more responsible and accountable for my work, helping and sharing ideas and knowledge to others. To make our successes more sustainable, we have to help others reach their success as well. The 12 values of the Cornerstones are the core values, not only for the development, but also for the change of human-thinking from negative to positive thoughts. Particularly, they change the people from non self-esteem, selfish, irresponsible, indolent, violence, and any activity in polluting the environment into more self-reliance, solidarity, accountability, industrious, sharing love, and deeply caring about the environment.
For external changes, I have experienced the approach and model of the international organization like Heifer International Cambodia, working on the development, the job I like most while studying at the university. Furthermore, it is the best chance for me to get more real information on the poverty in the countryside, especially, in remote areas, because most of the times when working with Heifer, I traveled a lot to many target provinces where Heifer projects are implemented. During my job, I found that the existence of NGO in Cambodia is very crucial in combating the poverty and hunger and in improving the livelihood of poor and vulnerable people. Besides my own changes, I noticed that Heifer’s development model and 12 value-based Cornerstones have assisted in improving the situation of Cambodian society, including poverty, domestic violence and gender, in particular promoting the women role and leadership in the development.
Finally, with the experiences and knowledge I learned from Heifer, I successful get a job as an Assistant Project Manager for ARTISANS Association of Cambodia. I would like to express my deep thank to Heifer International, especially, to all Heifer Cambodia staff, for giving me many good advices to improve my knowledge for seven months. Although it is the short time, but I think it is so long and a great time for me to work with Heifer as I have learned more things that I did not expect before. I wish all Heifer staffs success in their work and mission. I hope that Heifer is still the most important partner of Cambodian government, civil society, development partners, and private sector to improve the livelihood of poor people in Cambodia.
