with the second
year of Asia South Pacific (A/SP) co-mentoring program. The
purpose of the visit was for quality improvement, capacity
building, and accountability improvement of Heifer Cambodia in
compliance with A/SP’s shared leadership model. On the first day
of the visit, Mr. Ed shared his concept of the Shared Leadership Model to
the Heifer Cambodia team with the participation of Dr. Mahendra Lohani, Vice President of A/SP Program, and the Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation team. Then Mr. Ed and Dr. Mahendra spent a full day with the interview committee of Heifer Cambodia to interview Southeast Regional Program Coordinator candidates on May 10. The committee reaches a concurred decision after the interview sessions.
The co-mentoring team and Dr. Mahendra also visited a Heifer project and attended a POG ceremony at a community with the participation of local authorities of district, commune council, and village levels. In the ceremony, Mr. Meng Rann, Vice Governor of Samrontong District, welcomed the delegates by sharing his impression of Heifer’s activities in providing so great assistance. “As a local authority, I declare that I cooperate fully and work for Heifer,” said the Vice Governor. Replying to the participants’ impressions, Dr. Mahendra said, “The most important thing I found today is the understanding of Heifer’s Cornerstones and focus, and the recognition that the animals and other inputs invested here are used for the goal of development of the people. In addition to the focus on people development, we are also investing great efforts in using the Cornerstones in achieving holistic development in the community.” After the ceremony, the delegates shared development ideas with the community groups who were thinking of how to make their community better.
In a reflection meeting with the Heifer Cambodia staff, the co-mentoring team identified the strengths and room for improvement of the Heifer Cambodia Program. The team also reviewed the action plan set by Mr. Henri Sitorus, the Country Director of Heifer Indonesia, and the Heifer Cambodia team in previous co-mentoring activities to see what had been achieved, what had not been achieved, and what had been improved. Based on feedback from the Heifer Philippines co-mentoring team, an action plan was worked out for the next six months. “We cannot see any spot on our back unless someone behind tells us,” said Ed, referring to useful feedback for improving the program to reach the goal and mission.
